Huawei Announce the Huawei Mate 20 Pro - Arriving in Ireland Next Month

At the official global launch event in London’s ExCel Centre today, Huawei took the wraps of their latest flagship smartphone, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. The also announced its smaller sibling, the Mate 20, its Porsche Design cousin, the Mate 20 RS and its massive uncle, the Mate 20 X but, for the Irish market anyway, it looks like we’ll only be seeing the arrival of the Mate 20 Pro, for now. Below are some key specs for the device before we get into the details:

  • 6.39″ 19.5:9 QHD+ Curved OLED HDR Display
  • Kirin 980 7nm processor – 6 GB / 128 GB
  • 4200mAh Battery – Superfast Charging (40W) & wireless charging (15W via Huawei wireless charging dock)
  • 3x Rear Cameras (40MP main wide angle lens, 20MP Ultra wide lens, 8MP telephoto lens – 3x optical zoom)
  • 1x Front Camera with 3D Face Unlock (24MP)
  • IP68 – Superfast Charging (40W) & wireless charging
  • In-screen fingerprint reader
  • Android 9 Pie / EMUI 9.0

As you can tell from the specs above, the new Huawei Mate 20 Pro is an absolute beast of a phone and has some cutting edge features no other Android handset available in Western markets has. This includes the in-screen fingerprint scanner, 3D Face Unlock (much like Apple’s Face ID technology) and a massive 4200mAh battery that can actually charge other wireless charging capable devices. You’re also able to charge the new Mate 20 Pro incredibly fast as it’s the world’s first phone to allow 40W wired charging and 15W wireless charging via the new Huawei Wireless Charging Dock (Irish availability and pricing is still TBC)

Under the hood, Huawei have put their brand new 7nm Kirin 980 processor which makes it the first Android smartphone in the world to have the new 7nm architecture. What this means for the end user is much more powerful processing, faster app loading, better looking games and overall improved user experience when using the phone.

After introducing the world’s first Neural Processing Unit or NPU in last year’s Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro, they’ve gone and doubled the number of NPU chips in the new Mate 20 range and now the new handsets have more AI prowess than ever before. This will enable many ‘Google Lens’ like features, allowing you to scan menus and translate them in real time, point at famous landmarks and find out what they are and even scan various food dishes to find out their calorie count (this obviously needs to be tested quite a bit before we can believe this claim)

Up front, you have the 6.39″ 19:5.9 QHD+ HDR OLED display which curves over the sides of the device, similar in style to Samsung’s S9 & S9+ handsets. There are also Dolby Atmos tuned stereo speakers on board again, like the P20 Pro model, with the USB-Type C port acting as the bottom firing speaker this time around.

Round the back of the device, there’s the divisive square ‘triple lens & flash’ camera layout which can been seen as an evolution of the P20 Pro’s camera arrangement which was unveiled earlier this year. Back a 40MP RGB sensor, 20 ultra wide-angle lens and 10MP 3x optical zoom telephoto lens, this new camera arrangement is definitely a significant upgrade over the P20 Pro from which it has been borrowed.

With the new wide-angle lens, the new handset will also be capable of capturing extremely impressive macro shots up to just 2.5cm away from your subject. The ultra wide angle lens obviously also lends itself to capturing very impressive wide-angle landscape shots.

We’ll have our full review of the device live on the site very soon but let us know anything you’d like us to test out in particular in the comments below.
