Irish Adults Vote PlayStation 1 as the Best Games Console Santa Ever Brought
With Christmas fast approaching and letters to Santa flying out to lapland at breakneck speeds, all you gamers out there will have those handful of titles or even a new console you hope are under the tree come Christmas morning. What was it that got you into gaming though? Did Santa deliver the goods of a brand new games console one fateful Christmas morning, many years ago, and the rest was history?
I know, for me anyway, it was the introduction of the original PlayStation into our house on Christmas Day in 1995 that changed everything for me. Yes, we had a Sega Megadrive before that but the PS1 really changed the game (pun intended) so it’s no surprise to see the results of DID Electrical’s recent survey.
With 2000 Irish adults asked what was the best games console Santa ever brought them, Sony’s PlayStation 1 came out head and shoulders above the rest with 30.7% of the votes. Titles such as Rayman, Crash Bandicoot and Tekken would make the PS1 a household name across the country and its no surprise Irish gamers have such fond memories of the console.
Coming in 2nd in the poll with 18.8% of the vote is Nintendo’s NES console which was released all the way back in 1986! Rounding out the top 3, and the most beloved console of the 35-45 age bracket is the Sega Mega Drive with 16.6% of the vote. Sonic was an iconic ambassador for the console and helped cement Sega as one of the major players in the console wars of the 90s.
Finishing off the list in fourth, fifth and sixth place respectively are Microsoft’s original Xbox, the Nintendo SNES and finally the Nintendo 64, all of which had some heavy hitters in their own right including Halo, Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart.
A special mention goes out to the Atari and the Commodore 64, which did get some write-in votes and clearly hold a special place in some hearts, but all-in-all didn’t hold a flame to the more advanced consoles from the era. Below is the full list in all its glory:
- PlayStation 1 (30.7%)
- Nintendo NES (18.8%)
- Sega Mega Drive (16.1%)
- Xbox (12.5%)
- Super Nintendo (SNES) (12.3%)
- Nintendo 64 (8.8%)
- Atari (0.4%)
- Commodore 64 (0.2%)
- Other (0.2%)
Of course, handheld gaming devices can’t be left out of the equation! To no surprise, the original Gameboy topped the list overall, but the Nintendo DS was the handheld console that resonated most with the younger generation of adults in the 18-24 age bracket.
- Gameboy (38%)
- Nintendo DS (27%)
- PlayStation PSP (13%)
- Gameboy Colour (8%)
- Gameboy Advance (8%)
- Sega Game Gear (7%)
To coincide with this survey, the guys in DID Electrical also created a very cool interactive ‘Games Console World’ that lets you send a tiny spaceman through the evolution of games consoles and learn more about each one of them. You can check it out here!
