Huawei Unveil the €2299 Huawei Mate X: The World's Fastest Foldable 5G Phone
Hot on the heels of Samsung, who unveiled their folding Samsung Galaxy Fold smartphone at an event in San Francisco earlier in the week, Huawei decided to use their time at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 to unveil the new Huawei Mate X, the’World’s Fastest 5G Foldable Phone’. With its unique take on how foldable phones should function, the Huawei Mate X features the ‘Falcon Wing Mechanical Hinge’ to help it bend its screen in unprecedented ways.
Under the hood, there’s a brand new 7nm Balong 5000, an impressively large 4500mAh battery (split across the two sides of the device) and the new Mate X also supporting the world’s fastest 55W Huawei SuperCharge. This means you’ll be able to charge the 4500mAh battery to 85% in just 30 minutes! Coming in at just 5.4mm thick once unfolded, the Mate X really does looks extremely futuristic and resembles the devices we’ve been seen in science fiction films for the last few decades.
When folded, the Huawei Mate X offers a 6.6″ OLED screen, and when opened into its ‘tablet mode’, it turns into an even larger 8″ OLED display.
Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei CBG, said, “The HUAWEI Mate X’s revolutionary form factor is achieved by Huawei’s relentless effort in R&D. It represents a voyage into the uncharted. As a new breed of smartphones, HUAWEI Mate X combines 5G, foldable screen, AI and an all-new mode of interfacing to provide consumers with an unprecedented user experience. The HUAWEI Mate X will be the first key for consumers to open the door to 5G smart living.”
Embedded into the ‘body’ of the new Mate X is a triple array of camera sensors and lenses, co-engineered by Leica. Given the devices unique form factor, this triple camera set up can work as both the rear and front facing cameras on the device, all depending on how you hold it. The fingerprint scanner has also been integrated into the power button which makes sense seeing as the back of the device is technically just the other side of the tablet display that’s been folded away.
The new Huawei Mate X is said to be arrive in Ireland in mid 2019 for The eye-watering price of €2299 and will also support 5G connectivity. Unfortunately, Irish networks such as Vodafone and Three have yet to confirm an exact date for when we can expect their 5G rollout so you’ll just have to make do with 4G+ for now.
At MWC 2019, Huawei also launched a series of new products, including an updated HUAWEI MateBook X Pro, new mainstream notebook PCs, HUAWEI MateBook 13 and HUAWEI MateBook 14, as well as the HUAWEI 5G CPE Pro. Availability of these new devices is still TBC but we’ll be sure to update this article once we know more.
