Sony Announce New Xperia 1 - World's first 4K HDR OLED Display in a Smartphone & More
Sony have just finished up their MWC 2019 press conference and unveiled 4 new smartphones with their flagship XZ line becoming the new Xperia 1. The Sony Xperia 1 packs all the bells and whistles you’d come to expect from a Sony flagship handset including the world’s first 4K HDR OLED display in a smartphone with a unique 21:9 ‘CinemaWide’ aspect ratio measuring in at 6.5″ on the diagonal. Sony is using their custom X1 for Mobile engine for processing the HDR content and the display supports wide colour space ITU-R BT.2020 as well as DCI-P3 with Illuminant D65.
Massive mobile gaming titles such as Fortnite, Arena of Valor and Asphalt 9 will also support the new 21:9 aspect ratio while Game Enhancer mode optimises the performance and blocks unwanted notifications, as well as enabling you to record gameplay and find tips for your game online.
Sony has also included a triple camera array on the rear of the device, a first for a Sony smartphone and has the claim of offering the world’s first Eye AF in a smartphone. The lenses range from f1.6 12MP wide angle, 16mm ultra wide angle and a 52mm telephoto lens.
When it comes to media consumption, and to support the 4K HDR OLED display, the new Xperia 1 also comes with Dolby Atmos support and official Netflix ‘Creator Mode’ support for watching 4K HDR content ‘the way the creators intended.’
Other specs include the brand new Snapdragon 855 processor, 3300mAh battery, Corning Gorilla glass 6 on the front and back and IP65/IP68 water resistance.
The Xperia 1 will be available in Black, Purple, Grey and White with a rumoured RRP of €949. There’s no confirmation on Irish availability but we’ll be sure to update this article once we know more.
Sony Xperia 10 and Sony Xperia 10 Plus
Sony also introduced the new Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus with similar 21:9 Wide Full HD+ displays, 6″ for the Xperia 10 and 6.5″ for the Xperia 10 Plus. The new Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus also feature dual camera set ups with with Bokeh effects and 21:9 Movie and still image capture. The new upper-mid range handsets also features Sony’s High-Resolution Audio with DSEE HX™ and LDAC technologies.
The dual cameras set up on the Xperia 10 has 13MP+5MP lenses and the Xperia 10 Plus comes with 12MP+8MP and also offers 2X optical zoom. Other specs include a Snapdragon 630 processor and 2870mAh battery in the Xperia 10 and a Snapdragon 636 processor and 3000mAh battery in the Xperia 10 Plus. Both handsets will come with Android 9.0 and are available in select markets starting today. The Xperia 10 will cost €329 and will be available from operators this week while the Xperia 10 Plus will come in at €399 and is available to order online today.
Sony Xperia L3
Sony’s newest ‘entry level’ handset, the Xperia L3, features a 13MP and 2MP dual camera with and a 5.7” HD+ 18:9 display. The Xperia L3 features a large 3300mAh battery, with Sony’s Xperia Adaptive Charging, and USB Power Delivery fast charging. Like the above handsets, The Xperia L3 will cost €199 which exact Irish availability TBC at the moment.
