REVIEW: Huawei Watch GT
Back in March, Huawei unveiled their brand new Huawei P30 Pro and P30 handsets at an official launch event in Paris. Jump forward to today, and Huawei have an offer currently taking place that will see all new Huawei P30 Pro owners nabs themselves a brand new Huawei Watch GT (until the end of August). The watch itself cannot currently be bought on its own but will have a RRP of €199. As I am already an owner of the Huawei Watch 2 Classic, it fell to me to review this watch.
I really like the look of the watch. It’s not too dissimilar to my daily wear in the Classic 2. This is slightly lighter and I usually have a metal strap on my own watch where this has a silicone one. We have the ‘Sports Edition’ with the case size of 46mm. I’d describe this design in 3 word; slim, beautiful and strong. It is resilient to accidents because of its ceramic bezel design, stainless steel shell with a DLC coating. It’s pretty slim too, measuring in at 10.6 mm thick. We like the fact that it doesn’t look too crazy and I’d be happy wearing it dressed up or down. The display is a 1.39″ AMOLED touchscreen.
Sometimes less is more and after 2 weeks of wearing this watch, this may be my new smartwatch of choice. The mini phone on my wrist was probably too much up until now, I always have my phone to hand and the slightly paired back features on this watch makes me happy and less stressed. I get the info I want and I know I could turn some of the features of my old watch off but I like the simplicity of this Watch GT. You get smart notifications to power through your day. This watch is perfect for counting steps, your sedentary status and monitoring peak intense activities. Notifications of any messages, phone calls, alarms or set reminders are all displayed on your wrist as well.
I used the watch in the gym too for some workouts and I found it as accurate as the Watch 2 Classic. It’s a very strong fitness tracker. Firstly, there is Real-time Heart-rate Reporting with HUAWEI TruSeen 3.0 heart-rate monitoring technology. This provides a more efficient and accurate real-time personal measurement of your heart rate by using a self-learning algorithm and sensors. The watch also supports 3 Satellite Positioning Systems (GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO) worldwide to offer more accurate, faster and precise positioning.
The watch also provides coaching in introductory to advanced running courses to assist you in real-time while also providing guidance training and giving time-movement effect feedback. My favourite part of the watch is the sleep monitoring. I never used to wear a watch when I went to bed but I have really enjoyed reviewing my sleep patterns and seeing the breakdown between REM, light and deep sleep.
A joint-study with Harvard Medical School CDB Centre produced a brilliant sleep monitor program for every cycle of sleep. HUAWEI TruSleep 2.0 actually identifies common sleep related issues and provides more than 200 potential suggestions to help you sleep better.
This is the winning feature for me and the main reason I’ll be using this watch daily. Claims of up to 30 days with the sensors turned off and 2 weeks with heart rate monitoring on and a few workouts a week. The watch features a double chipset architecture and low power consumption system to maximise battery life and performance. Very impressive stuff. A full charge only takes 2 hours to charge to full again.
You may have picked up on this but I really like this watch. It’s smart enough for me to be practical, stylish enough for me to wear all day and I’m happy to wear it to bed to help me track my sleep. I’m sure there are better specialty watches out there but for a good solid all-rounder, I’m very happy to recommend this watch. I look forward to it going on general sale and it’s amazing to be given away free when you buy a Huawei P30 Pro smartphone.
P30 Pro is available from free on bill pay, from €779.99 on prepay and stockists are Vodafone, eir, Carphonewarehouse, Tescomobile, Virgin and sim free through Harvey Norman.
