Major Nelson has posted on his blog how voice chat on the Xbox One will be vastly superior to the Xbox 360, thanks to a little help from Skype.
A side-by-side comparison shows how drastic the leap is, and Major Nelson says that the improvements were down to using Skype’s audio codec which has “which has a proven track record of high-quality voice through billions of hours of use within Skype”
It’s also down to the new expansion port on the new controller, which according to Major Nelson allows “capturing and rendering speech at 24 KHz PCM, which is triple the rendering sample rate and a 50 percent capture rate improvement over Xbox 360 headsets.”
Every Xbox One console will come with a wired headset in the box so this is good news for everyone, plus the audio improvements work across all apps and in-game chat, not just Skype.
