Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Protect: Smoke + Carbon Monoxide Alarm Now Available in Ireland

Heating bill savings may range from 5 percent to 27 percent (€12 to €306) depending on the user’s home, climate, and Nest Thermostat features used

DUBLIN – Sept. 18, 2014 – Nest Labs, Inc. (www.nest.com) today announced the availability of the Nest Learning Thermostat™ and Nest Protect: Smoke + Carbon Monoxide™ Alarm in Ireland. From today, Nest products are available in Harvey Norman retail stores across the country, as well as online at Google Play and www.nest.com/ie.

“We’re excited to transform the Irish consumer’s relationship with these previously unloved products, and by the opportunity to help them save energy, stay comfortable, and improve home safety,” said Lionel Paillet, general manager for Europe, Nest. “The launch of Nest products in Ireland is particularly timely given new legislation regarding carbon monoxide alarms and Ireland’s continued focus on energy conservation.”

Nest Protect: Smoke + Carbon Monoxide Alarm

According to the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government, each year there are around 4,500 domestic fires in Ireland[1], and between one and two deaths due to carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning[2].

“Earlier this month, a change in building regulations meant that householders must ensure carbon monoxide alarms are fitted when new or replacement boilers, fires, heaters and stoves are installed,” said Lionel Guicherd-Callin, Head of Product Marketing for Europe. “The Nest Protect: Smoke + Carbon Monoxide Alarm gives you information, not just alarms. We hope Nest Protect will not only keep people safe, but will become a beloved, valued part of the home. Because a beep simply isn’t enough.”

Nest Protect does much more than just sound a shrill alarm when there’s danger in your home. Nest Protect speaks to you, telling you what and where the problem is. It will even alert your phone via the Nest app when something’s wrong. It knows when there’s a little smoke or a lot of smoke, and when there are emergency levels of carbon monoxide, a danger you can’t see or smell. As soon as Nest Protect senses there’s a problem, you’ll get a friendly Heads‑Up warning so you can address the problem or evacuate the home. And at night, Nest Protect’s Pathlight glows white to light your way in the dark as you pass below it.

Nest Learning Thermostat Features

According to Eurostat[3], a Directorate-General of the European Commission, estimates that around 44% of the average household energy bill is spent on heating, which is equal to €876 per year

Nest recently completed a study on potential energy savings users could experience with the Nest Thermostat. Nest found that heating bill savings for Irish customers of the Nest Learning Thermostat may range from 5 percent to 27 percent, resulting in annual savings from €12 to €306, based on comparing simulations of energy usage associated with typical setpoint schedules versus setpoint schedules that could be generated by the Nest Thermostat’s energy-saving features. [Heating bill savings, and therefore monetary savings, varied based on the user’s home, climate, and which Nest Thermostat features were used.] For more information, please visit Nest.com.

The Nest Thermostat for Europe takes away the hassle of programming. Simply turn it up and down like a manual thermostat for about a week and Nest will create a personalised schedule that is refined over time. And with its built-in sensors, the Nest Thermostat knows when no one is home, so Nest’s Auto-Away feature can automatically turn down the temperature, helping to save even more energy. And you can control the temperature from your smartphone, tablet or computer.

For families that don’t have thermostat wires available in the wall, want to replace wireless thermostats, or just want to change where the thermostat is located, the Stand for the Nest Learning Thermostat is available to place Nest in a preferred location.

Installation and Compatibility

Because the Nest Thermostat connects to the heating system using high-voltage cables, professional installation is highly recommended. Working with Sierra Support Services, who visit over 1 million Irish homes a year and have portfolio or leading clients, Nest has trained installers throughout Ireland who can be found at www.nest.com/ie.

Installers interested in becoming a Nest PRO can visit pro.nest.com. Benefits include access to exclusive training and tools, live VIP support, and customer referrals.

The Nest Learning Thermostat is compatible with almost all central heating systems, including:

●      Combi and condensing boilers

●      System and heat-only boilers

●      Hydronic underfloor systems

●      Air source and ground source heat pumps (heating only)

●      Zoned systems (one Nest Thermostat per zone)

●      Switched live systems

●      Low-voltage (dry contact) systems

The Nest app is available for Android (from Google Play and Amazon Appstore) and iOS (from Apple’s App Store) devices at no cost. A Web-based version can also be accessed at home.nest.com.

The More You Nest, The Better it Gets

Nest products can do even more by working together. For example, if Nest Protect’s carbon monoxide alarm goes off and there is an active Wi-Fi connection at the time of the event, a connected Nest Thermostat automatically turns off the gas boiler – a frequent source of CO leaks. In addition, Nest Protect’s activity sensors improve the Auto-Away feature of the Nest Thermostat.

In addition, the Nest Developer Program makes it possible for your Nest devices to interact with the things you already use every day, both inside and outside the home. More than just linking and remote controlling the devices in your home, Works with Nest allows everything from lighting to appliances to fitness bands and even cars to securely connect with Nest products, bringing the conscious home to life by making those homes safer, more energy efficient, and more aware.

For example, if Nest Protect detects smoke or carbon monoxide, LIFX bulbs can flash red to let you know there might be danger and help alert those who are hearing impaired. And if you have both the Nest Thermostat and Jawbone UP24 band, your home can start to heat up or cool down before you even step out of bed
