REVIEW: Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 - Leader of the Pack
If you’ve been keeping track of our site over the last number of years, you’ll have seen that I’ve reviewed a lot of earbuds in my time. Having tested the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 for the last few weeks, I can confidently say they are the best ones I’ve tested to date. With Active Noise Cancelling included and improved battery life over their predecessor, these new earbuds from Sennheiser are fantastic competition for the likes of Sony’s WF-1000MX3 wireless earbuds and Apple’s AirPod Pro earbuds but with their class-leading sound, they receive top marks from me.
Design & Build Quality
When I opened up the True Wireless 2’s packaging, I was greeted by the charging case and the two wireless earbuds. Finished in a rough grey cotton, (similar to the 1st gen model) Sennheiser are aiming to differentiate themselves from the standard, glossy plastic for a more bespoke and high end look and feel.
The case is also slightly larger than other wireless earbud cases I’ve seen before and is a rectangular shape. It’s much harder to misplace and much easier to find on your desk or in your backpack.
The case opens and closes with a satisfying, magnetic click. It doesn’t look, sound or feel like plastic and really helps sell the high-end experience Sennheiser is going for with the True Wireless 2 earbuds.
The earbuds themselves are a matte plastic with circular metallic sections used for the controls. The matte finish removes the possibility for greasy fingerprints and tones down any garishness other, more glossy-finished wireless earbuds have. The metal is grooved for tactile awareness too and is incredibly responsive to the touch.
Fit & Feel
Wearing the True Wireless 2 earbuds is incredibly comfortable. Often I would wear them for several hours at a time without even noticing they were still in. Not once did I need to remove them to give my ears a rest, and they never really became uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time. Now, I know all ears are different but Sennheiser have definitely refined the ergonomics of these buds over their first generation iteration.
Better still, it’s often worrying when you wear wireless earbuds that they’ll fall out and disappear, especially if you’re wearing them while being active. I’m happy to report that no amount of regular jostling could dislodge these earbuds from my ears. You also get a selection of different sized tips to help you get the right fit for your ears.
When it comes to the audio quality, seeing as these are a Sennheiser product, you have a good idea of what to expect, class-leading performance. And the True Wireless 2 delivers. With noise cancelling on, external ambient sounds such as passing cars are greatly reduced and music plays as though your in a room filled with speakers. The nuance of every song and instrument can be clearly heard and the depth of sound is truly amazing.
But it’s not just music that the True Wireless 2 handles impressively well. Often, wireless earbuds have great sound for music playback but leave a lot to be desired when it comes to phone calls, thankfully, that’s not the case here. Answering a phone call is as easy as tapping the earbud and speaking. The quality of voice calls, both on my end and for the user on the other end, is fantastic and there wasn’t a single time I experienced a drop in quality.
The True Wireless 2 also comes with Transparent Hearing which allows you to hear the world around you, while still listening to music and taking your phone calls. It’s a really handy feature you don’t even realise you need until you’ve started using it.
Battery life on the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 is fantastic. Sennheiser claims you get seven hours from a charge and that estimate is bang on. Admittedly, there are earbuds such as Samsung’s Galaxy Buds+ and Master & Dynamic’s MW07 Plus which offer better battery life but their audio quality just isn’t up to par.
I’ve used these earbuds constantly since getting them to review and have only run them completely down once or twice. The charging case keeps the earbuds topped up nicely and keeps them safe as well so there’s no reason not to have them in there when they’re not in use. One thing we do wish Sennheiser implemented was wireless charging on the charging case but the USB Type C charging port is helpful.
Connectivity is also a breeze. I was able to connect the earbuds to my Huawei P30 Pro, laptop and desktop with ease and the True Wireless 2 are clever enough to know which device to connect to whilst I’m using them.
The Momentum True Wireless 2 earbuds are the best true wireless earbuds I’ve used to date and come highly recommended. If you’re in the market for incredible sound, comfort and usability, these are one of the best options available right now.
