Google has just announced the Pixel 4a. A brand new addition into their entry-to-midrange line of handsets, the a line. Having been rumoured for months, we can only imagine the delays and issues Google came up against when trying to launch a new handset in a global pandemic. Now with device finally official, we can take a deep dive into its key specs and what €389 will get you on the new Google Pixel 4a.

  • 144 x 69.4 x 8.2mm, 143g
  • Polycarbonate body

From the leaks over the last few weeks and months, the handset’s design doesn’t throw up too many surprises, but it’s worth mentioning that the given dimensions mean it’s slightly smaller than the Pixel 3a. However, the display – while not edge-to-edge – cuts down the forehead and chin of the 2019 phone so you’re getting much more display than before.

There’s a fingerprint scanner on the rear which, while we wish it was an in-screen version, is understandable given its price point.

Also on the rear, there’s a single camera and flash. That does, at least, give some continuity to the camera bump on the Pixel 4.

Another interesting inclusion is the 3.5mm headphone jack which is sure to please those who just don’t want to make the jump to truly wireless headphones or earbuds.

Google Pixel 4a Side profile

  • 5.81″ display, 2340 x 1080 pixels, 19.5:9
  • Punch hole selfie camera
  • OLED, 60Hz

The display on the Pixel 4a is flat with slimmed down bezels and no notch. Instead, there’s a punch hole for the front selfie camera, something that we’ve not seen on a Pixel handset before.

It’s also a ‘normal’ 60Hz display, so no Pixel 4 90hz capabilities unfortunately but it is OLED which is nice at this price point. The resolution is HD+ which is more than adequate on this size of device.

Hardware specs

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 730, 4G
  • 6GB RAM, 128GB storage
  • 3140mAh battery

The new Pixel 4a packs one of Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 730G processor and there’s also 6GB of RAM.

For storage, there’s 128GB, which again, is more than enough for what’s meant to be an affordable device. The 3140mAh battery is also a slight bump up from last year’s Pixel 3a and Google reassured us that you can expect ‘all day battery’ given their AI smarts for battery and app management.

During our briefing, Google did state there will be a 5G model of the handset arriving later this year with, what we expect to be a Snapdragon 765 processor, a chip with integrated 5G. Price for this 5G compatible handset, which will be identical to the 4a aside from its processor, will be €499 but we don’t have an exact release date just yet. It is expected to launch alongside the upcoming Pixel 5, which has also been confirmed to be a 5G device so we should see these two need handsets unveiled sometime in September or October.

  • 12.2-megapixel main camera
  • 8-megapixel front camera

Surprisingly, even for an entry-to-midrange level handset device in 2020, there is only a single camera in the rear housing, along with the LED flash. Now, for anyone who’s aware of Google’s camera capabilities, you’ll know this is nothing to worry about, especially if the optics from the Pixel 4, along with Google’s own AI photography tricks are anything to go by.

For the rear camera, there’s a 12.2-megapixel 1.4µm sensor with f/1.7 lens and optical image stabilisation along with Google’s impressive Night Sight feature and the ability to capture some astrophotography. The front camera in the display is an 8-megapixel 1.22µm sensor with f/2.0 lens that will be more than enough for the majority of users.

We’ll be sure to put Google’s newest device through its paces along with testing many of its new features including live captioning for webcalls and regular voicecalls in our full review so be sure to keep an eye on our site for when that goes live.

Pricing & Availability

As stated in the title of this article, the The Google Pixel 4a will set you back €389 which, when taking everything into consideration, is quite an impressive asking price but will be up against some stuff competition from Samsung’s own A line of handsets and the new OnePlus Nord which boasts 6 cameras for €399.

The Google Pixel 4a will be available for pre-order in ‘Just Black’ on September 10th and will start shipping on October 1st, directly from the Irish Google Store and also from Vodafone Ireland.
