REVIEW: Huawei P40 Pro+ - Incredible Camera Credentials
Huawei make some of the best hardware available right now and also have one of the most aggressive development cycles. Only a few months after the release of their current flagship, the P40 Pro, now comes a new, improved model, the P40 Pro+.
The Huawei P40 Pro+ takes what was already a great phone and makes it even better. The Pro+ features the same great display running 2640 x 1200 display running 90Hz, but picks up far superior camera module along with a few other nice tweaks.
In terms of colours, we seen Huawei bring the Silver Frost gradients with the P40 Pro, but with the Pro+, Ireland will see a black ceramic finish, which adds to the overall premium feel of the device.
Speaking of which, the P40 Pro+ feels extremely well built with its quad waterfall-style display, polished aluminum sides and sturdy ceramic back. It’s also got a hefty but not overly heavy weight to it but one thing I did notice was how slippy it was so I definitely recommend putting a cover of some sort on this handset.
In terms of specs, the P40 Pro+ is almost identical to the P40 Pro (which we reviewed back in April) so we won’t focus on the similarities here and will get straight into the main star of the show…
Now for those cameras. The P40 Pro+ features no less than 5 cameras. They are:
- 50MP Ultra Vision Camera (with OIS)
- 40MP Ultra Wide Cine Camera
- 8MP SuperZoom Camera (10x Optical Zoom)
- 8MP Telephoto Camera (3X Optical Zoom)
- 3D Depth Sensing Camera
Those cameras combine to create a stunning 100x SuperSensing zoom which is capable of capturing detail over 500 meters away.
Being able to zoom has always been one of the big features reserved for DSLRs, but with its incredible new camera system, the P40 Pro+ is one of the most capable smartphone cameras available anywhere in the world right now.
When comparing the camera set ups between the P40 Pro and Plus mode, the two main cameras on each are identical, with both phones using a 50-megapixel wide lens and a 40-megapixel ultrawide lens. Where things are improved for the the P40 Pro+ is that it includes an 8-megapixel periscope telephoto lens with 10x optical zoom, compared to the P40 Pro’s 12-megapixel periscope telephoto lens with “only” a 5x optical zoom.
In every day use, this bigger optical zoom range allows you to take zoomed photos with more detail and clarity. Before, certain objects may have lacked texture and definition, but with the P40 Pro+, I found that you can capture most objects vividly from a distance.

Looking at the embedded tweet above, you can see just how far away I was from the beach in the photos, yet I was able to capture the fisherman, no other phone would be able to capture that image with the same level of clarity. Here is a much closer zoom test but still a very good way of showing the detail that can captured on distance objects (in this case, a bird) when using the 10x optical zoom lens.
If one zoom lens wasn’t enough, the P40 Pro+ also has an extra 8-megapixel telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. This is something the P40 Pro lacks, and together with the periscope telephoto lens, it enables you to reach a hybrid zoom of up to 20x and a digital zoom of 100x. This is double the amount the P40 Pro offers.

The camera’s low light capabilities is still as impressive as always with its ability to keep noise levels to an absolute minimum, even in very challenging conditions.
The camera story doesn’t stop there with one of the highest quality front-facing cameras on the market. The front dual camera features a 32MP camera with auto-focus and an IR depth camera, which produce selfies with natural bokeh effects.
In terms of performance, the P40 Pro+ is powered by the Kirin 990 5G processor and comes with 512GB storage, up from the 256GB in the P40 Pro, while also offering the same 8GB RAM.
When it comes to battery, there’s the same big 4,200mAh battery that’ll get you through a full day of aggressive use. The phone also supports Huawei SuperCharge with a Max 40W, fast wireless charging and also reverse wireless charging, just like the P40 Pro.
When it comes to the software, Huawei offer 3 ways to get the apps you want on the HUAWEI P40 Pro+:
- Phone Clone – One easy way to transfer your apps, contacts, data, files and photos from your old smartphone to your new smartphone, in a few simple steps.
- AppGallery – Huawei’s official app store with more than 420 million monthly active users and a constantly growing list of apps. It features a 4-layer detection mechanism to ensure apps featured are safe to download and use. Simply browse and download the apps you need.
- Petal Search – one of three ways in which Huawei users can find and download apps on to their HMS devices, alongside AppGallery and Phone Clone. Simply use it directly from the home screen of your device.
Each of these options combined offer you the best chance of getting all the apps you’re used to on the device so the lack of Google Play Services might not be as bad as you think. I’ve been using the phone for a number of weeks now and have found very little issues with any of the apps I’ve installed myself along with the more official methods through Huawei’s own AppGallery service and the very handy Phone Clone feature.
Ever since this handset and, more particularly, its 10x optical zoom credentials, were announced, I couldn’t wait to try it out. In a world where flagship smartphones and their cameras are being pushed to their limits, Huawei have created one of the most powerful camera system set ups ever put on a phone. I know that is quite the claim but when you compare its capabilities to other flagship devices from its biggest rivals, the P40 Pro+ easily bests each of them with the sheer amount of innovation and development that’s housed in the phone’s camera module.
Understandably, the lack of Google apps will be a deterrent for some but if you want the best smartphone camera available on the Irish market right now, this is it.
