New iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and HomePod Mini | Apple’s ‘Hi, Speed’ Event Recap
David McGinley

Apple just held it’s latest event direct from Apple Park in California titled “Hi, Speed”. Want the lowdown about the latest iPhones and product announcements? Sure you do!

If you were going to play a drinking game for today’s Apple Event, I sure hope you didn’t take a drink everytime ‘5G’ was mentioned because boy Apple sure wanted you to know their new phones are 5G capable. As a reminder, 5G is the next evolution of 4G mobile data speeds and claims speeds that can be faster than the average wired internet speed in Ireland of around 20Mbs and 30Mbs

Apple announced a record 4 new phones today – all 5G capable across a variety of ways that 5G can be beamed to your phone. Today in Ireland you’ll be able to get 5G from Three, Eir and Vodafone (check here for 5G coverage in your area). There’s no doubt that Apple including 5G in their handsets will radically supercharge the deployment and popularity of it so it’s great to see Apple include this. It means faster app downloads, better quality streaming, better gaming (and online gaming) so we are excited to see it land on the new iPhones this year.

Here’s what is common across the line up:

  • 5G
  • A14 Bionic Chip
  • ‘Mag Safe’ for wireless charging and clipping accessories to your phone like a wallet. This is seriously cool for anyone (like myself) who struggles to place a phone correctly on a flat wireless charger
  • OLED screens (better blacks, contrast and power efficiency)
  • “Ceramic Shield” glass that’s up to 4x more shatter resistant
  • Night Mode for ultrawide
  • A new design with flat edges that takes inspiration from the  iPhone 4 and iPhone 5, with a bit of iPad Pro thrown in
  • No phone will have a charger or earpods thrown in for environmental reasons

Here’s the different models too:

iPhone 12 Pro Max

You want the best iPhone? You got it! The iPhone 12 Pro Max takes all of the above and puts it in a phone with a whopping 6.7-inch screen (up from 6.5-inch last year). It also upgrades the cameras even further with a new telephoto lens that can zoom in more, new wide-angle camera that’s sharper and lets in more light too. If you’ve been holding on for a smaller cheaper HomePod well Apple just made your day. The HomePod Mini combines Apple’s great audio skills with Siri, unique telecom features, the ability to find your iPhone, run your smartphone and handoff music from room to room. Irish pricing and availability is TBC at writing.
