Announced at the official Mate 40 series reveal event (which isn’t coming to Ireland unfortunately) Huawei unveiled their new FreeBuds Studio which are the company’s first pair of over-ear headphones that pack some high-end features and a sleek design.

While Huawei didn’t share too much granular detail on the headphones during the big Mate 40 reveal, we did get a few bits of information. The FreeBuds Studio will come in two colour options (gold and black) and have a slim aluminium band connecting the two earcups. Those earcups also house the touch controls for skipping tracks, pausing your music and so on.

The new FreeBuds Studio also have Active noise cancellation (ANC) and Huawei said during the event these will cancel out up to 40db of noise, much like the impressive ANC capabilities of their in-ear alternatives, the FreeBuds Pro. There are six microphones, along with a dual-antenna system. I, for one, can’t wait to see how these compare what Sony and Bose have to offer from their high-end ANC headphones.

Battery life is said to come in at 24 hours, with a short 10 minute charge over USB Type C giving you 8 hours of usage, which is pretty impressive. You can also have them connected to two devices at once, and this works across iOS, macOS and Windows – along with Huawei and other Android phones.

Huawei didn’t divulge any release information unfortunately but they did share their price which is €299. This sits them nicely below Sony’s and Bose’s top end offerings but we’ll have to wait and see if they can offer similar audio and ANC quality.
