REVIEW: Huawei FreeBuds 4i - An Impressive Update
Huawei unveiled their newest Huawei FreeBuds 4i wireless earbuds on February 21st just gone and the next iteration in the FreeBuds line comes with ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) for a noise-free sound experience, along with improved battery, better design, and superior quality audio.
Noise-canceling earbuds have become a daily necessity for many people due to their compact design, portability, and noise reduction capabilities, offering users a more immersive listening experience whilst not being too bulky or cumbersome. Huawei’s new FreeBuds 4i are designed to offer all this, with a price point that won’t break the bank either.
The charging case for the new FreeBuds 4i adopts a cute, almost egg-like design which feels silky in the hand and is extremely light. The pairing key is located on the right side, while the bottom houses the USB Type-C charging port.
Unfortunately but expected at their price point, the FreeBuds 4i don’t support wireless charging. Inside, the two wireless earbuds feature a rounded design due to the overall curved design. They also come with three comfortable-to-wear silicone earplugs for different ear canal sizes so you can find the right fit.
A single earphone weighs in at only 5.5 grams, so it feels very comfortable in the ear. Overall, even though both the earbuds themselves and the case are quite light, they feel sturdy and well built.
Set Up & Features
The FreeBuds 4i Bluetooth connection function is also smooth and user friendly. Once you open the charging case lid, you will see a connection prompt pop-up window on your Huawei device and all you need to do to complete the operation is to click connect. To connect to other devices, you just need to press and hold the function key on the side to reset the device.
A nice little addition is that they also support automatic wear monitoring so whatever your listening to or watching on your device will automatically pause when you remove one of the earbuds and the playback will automatically continue when you put the headset again within 3 minutes.
Sound & ANC Quality
The FreeBuds 4i’s feature multiple microphones on each stem that helps detect environmental noise and works with ANC algorithms to create inverted sound waves to cancel noise signals to achieve noise reduction effects. We found the ANC in particular to be extremely effective and up there with what Huawei were already achieving with their more premium FreeBuds Pro model. If you do want to let the outside world in, you can also long-press the stem of either of the earbuds to switch between ANC and ‘Awareness’ mode.
There are different touch modes available as well that you can tweak in the AI Life app that allow you to make calls, switch between songs, and other functions.
When it comes to overall sound quality, the FreeBuds 4i’s 10mm dynamic drivers are more than up to the challenge delivering clear, well-rounded audio with impressive bass levels to boot. Volume levels were equally as impressive, and, with their €79 price point, you definitely won’t be disappointed with the sound quality.
Huawei’s new headset claims to offer up to 10 hours of music playback time when fully charged, and 6.5 hours of continuous talk time. This can then be extended to 22 hours and music playback and 14 hours of talk time with the charging case. With our own usage, we definitely weren’t getting the full 10 hours of playback but we did have ANC switched on the majority of the time so this would impact overall battery life. Even still, we were still getting close to 7-8 hours of overall use before we had to return the earbuds to the charging case, which is very impressive. They also support fast charging when in the case so a 10 min charge will give you 4 more hours of playtime.
Overall, Huawei’s newest FreeBuds 4i wireless earbuds are an impressive offering at a competitive price point. With long lasting battery life, respectable ANC and clear audio and call quality, you won’t be disappointed with what you get from these new true wireless earbuds.
