At their official live stream event today (22nd July 2021), OnePlus finally took the wraps off their newest ‘flagship killer’, the Nord 2. OnePlus have been using the terms ‘flagship killer’ for a while now and well, for the last few years, it was a hard nut to swallow. But with the Nord 2 announcement, OnePlus is attempting to broaden and deepen the phones they sell.
There’s quite a few phones in the Nord line already, the N10, N100, N200 (USA only), Nord CE, and the OG Nord (and now the Nord 2) are their flagship killers. You can see they are fond of the term as, as a company, that’s how they started but, I think with the Nord 2 5G, OnePlus are starting to take the challenge seriously. Below is all the info announced today and we’ll have our full review up very soon.
The NORD 2:
At its core, the Nord 2 is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI. This chip, specifically with the AI is exclusive to OnePlus, and by all accounts, it’s a chip that punches above its weight. Once we get into our review, we’ll do some comparisons with the industry leading Snapdragon 888 that’s featured in the OnePlus 9.
When it comes to RAM and storage, there’ll be 2 options available – 8GB with 128gb of storage or 12gb with 256gb of storage. Both are nice configurations and will suit almost everyone who’s after a new phone (and then some).
Where OnePlus really stepped up their game was their collaboration with Hasselblad on the OnePlus 9 series. While the Nord 2 doesn’t have the Hasselblad partnership, it does borrow that great 50mp flagship camera (from the OP9 wide angle lens) and uses it as the primary camera in the Nord 2, so we’re expecting great things from it as that particular lens is great in the OnePlus 9.
The camera also makes use of the AI in the MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI and should be really good a sensing things it’s taking photos of and optimizing accordingly. On top of the main 50mp sensor, there’s an 8pm Ultrawide camera with a 119degrees field of view and then to finish out the 3 camera setup, they have included a 2mp black & white sensor. Lets be real here, those aren’t really going to give you decent photos with such low resolution sensors, but the main camera should make up for them both.
On the front, the selfie camera is clocking in at 32mp and can detect up to 5 faces and features a nightscape mode, which should be great for those night time selfies.
In terms of the screen, its coming with a 90hz AMOLED Screen at 6.43 inches and 1080p resolution. It benefits from the new chip with AI Colour Boost and AI Resolution Boost – it boosts apps like YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat and upgrades things to full HD and also boosts the colour as well (you’ll be able to toggle on / off if you’re not into them.). The display also features a smart, ‘Ambient Display ‘- This time, the smart sensor can register the light around you and what you’re looking at on the screen and make sure it’s really clear and bright.
Out of the box, the Nord 2 runs Oxygen OS 11.3 (not Color OS) and will come with 2 years of Software updates and 3 of security updates.
The Nord 2 is using the same battery setup as the OnePlus 9 (i.e. 2 internal batteries with a total of 4500mAh and can charge at 65w with the supplied charger and cable.
Other highlights include dual speakers, dual sim, splash proof, gorilla glass and a fiberglass infused polymer in the mid-frame. The full specs can be found at the end of this post.
Price & Colours
The Nord 2 5g will come in 2 colours – Grey Sierra and Blue Haze. In Ireland, we’ll have 2 versions available with the high end model packing 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage for €519 (Grey only) and will be available on Amazon and OnePlus.com. The 8GB/128GB version will be available in both colours and retail for €419
OnePlus Buds Pro
Today OnePlus officially unveiled its first smart adaptive noise cancellation (ANC) earbuds, the OnePlus Buds Pro. The new premium true wireless earbuds feature an industry-leading smart noise reduction system, superior call quality, extended battery performance, and a more personalized sound to create a truly immersive and premium audio experience.
The OnePlus Buds Pro feature a smart ANC system that intelligently drowns out unwanted sound frequencies in real time, such as environmental noise or chatter, adjusting the level of noise cancellation accordingly to keep users immersed and undistracted from their tunes. Each earbud features a three-mic setup that actively filters out noise levels of up to 40dB as needed in order to deliver a much more comfortable and tailored listening experience as opposed to conventional ANC systems with fixed levels of noise cancellation. Coupled with enhanced noise reduction algorithms and a mechanical design to reduce wind noise, the OnePlus Buds Pro ensure calls are always crystal clear even in loud environments.
The true wireless earbuds feature OnePlus Audio ID, a carefully calibrated sound profile that caters to user-specific sound sensitivities. Coupled with two large 11mm dynamic drivers and Dolby Atmos support, the OnePlus Buds Pro bring music to life with rich treble, heart-pounding bass, and crystal-clear vocals.
On top of amazing sound, the OnePlus Buds Pro also feature a worry-free battery life of up to 38 hours along with the charging case on a full charge and 10 hours with just a brief 10-minute charge. The earbuds also support OnePlus’ lightning-fast Warp Charge, as well as third party Qi-certified wireless chargers so users can stay connected with their music at all times. In addition to the ergonomic design that offers a light yet snug fit for carrying on the go, the true wireless earbuds also offer Bluetooth 5.2 support and latency as low as 94ms with Pro Gaming mode turned on.
OnePlus Buds Pro will be first available to pre-order on oneplus.com from August 18th to midnighton August 24th. Once this introductory pre-order window closes, open sales will begin on oneplus.com and on Amazon UK from August 25th. For more information, please visit OnePlus.com.
We’ll have our full review later in the year.
