Google has just announced a number of new devices that are joining their Nest family. The additions include a new Nest Doorbell that’s battery powered, so you don’t need to worry about wiring it in and there’s also a new battery-powered Nest Cam for indoor and outdoor use. These devices will be followed later in the year by a new wired Nest Cam and Nest Cam Floodlight, which offers automatic illumination of an area when it detects motions, on top of the usual Nest Cam features.

These newly announced devices fit in with the ever-evolving design of Google’s Nest products and shouldn’t look too obtrusive in most modern homes. All you’ll need to get them set up is the Google Home app and a solid enough Wi-Fi connection.

The new Nest Cam and Nest Doorbell are also different to their predecessors as, thanks to new internal hardware, they can now detect different types of motions directly on the device, so the need for a Nest Aware subscription is less important for some of the more advanced features of the new devices. You’ll also get 24/7 live view and  3 hours of free event-based recording with these devices as standard too.

This change is to ensure you’re alerted about the important things to do with the safety and security of your home so you shouldn’t be getting notifications about a tree blowing in the wind outside your kitchen window as the device is now smart enough to know the difference, without the need for a subscription. That’s not to say Nest Aware is going away, new users of the service can still trial it for 30 days and you’ll have access to 30 days of recording, all captured in the cloud, for you to look back on. There’s also the added featured of 1 hour of local video recording, if your Wi-Fi goes down, so you can watch back incase anything untoward happened.
