The Find X5 series from OPPO has arrived, with three phones to choose from, including the top-tier Find X5 Pro. This seems like OPPO’s most comprehensive flagship yet, with a ceramic shell, Hasselblad-powered camera, and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 inside – With this device, OPPO has a serious competitor to the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra.
The standard Find X5 and Find X5 Lite, on the other hand, are excellent phones in their own right, and OPPO’s current flagship lineup should have something for everyone when it launches. Here is our review of the OPPO Find X5 Pro.
Design & Build Quality
Right from the off, the Glaze Black ceramic rear of the Find X5 Pro is definitely a head turner, it also highlights the superior material used for the phone’s IP68-rated body. The ceramic back is two times tougher and two times better at heat conduction than a conventional phone glass panel, keeping the Find X5 Pro effectively cooler under gaming stress.
The camera island has a unique asymmetric shape with no harsh edges that rises gradually from the back and merges in more smoothly than traditional rectangular or square islands. The Hasselblad camera relationship is clearly advertised across the back, as is the hint that the X5 Pro features the in-house MariSilicon X image neural processor unit within.
Because of the ceramic back, the phone is somewhat heavier than the Find X3 Pro, but it feels robust in the hand and has a well-balanced weight distribution. The tall and thin design, along with the curved display edges, provides an ergonomic grasp for one-handed operation and the back swipe motion. It’s definitely one of the best ‘in-hand’ feels of any phone currently on the market thanks to all of these rounded and curved edges. Overall, the Find X5 Pro makes a strong design statement that helps it stand out from the crowd.
The Find X3 Pro’s 6.7″ 1440p display featured the greatest refresh rate range of any phone last year, dipping as low as 5Hz when presenting static graphics and up to 120Hz during 120fps gaming sessions. Following that, OPPO’s sibling firm OnePlus and, more recently, Samsung with the Galaxy S22 Ultra, launched phones with 1Hz-120Hz screens, and the Find X5 Pro’s 6.7″ WQHD+ curved OLED display now follows suit.
There is no longer an option to select a set 120Hz refresh rate, since OPPO’s dynamic refresh technology now kicks in automatically based on the type of material displayed on the phone, and the only other choice is to maintain the screen at 60Hz if you prefer. The Find X5 Pro uses “multi-brightness colour calibration” to make the most of its superb display panel’s capabilities, ensuring that the screen is as color-true in all lighting settings, whether on the beach or in the dark. Watching any content on the device looks fantastic and the colour reproduction, especially when watching HDR content is a sight to behold. This is definitely one of the best smartphone displays currently available on the Irish market.
OPPO’s latest flagship also has the proper internal components to keep the phone feeling speedy and responsive. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor is in charge, with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. It also includes a function that allows you to use portion of the storage as additional RAM. Being honest, we’re not sure when someone will need more than 12GB of RAM on their smartphone but at least it’s an option.
Imaging is where the Find X5 Pro really shines. The rear camera system includes a 50MP f/1.7 1.0-micron main shooter (Sony IMX 766) with omni-directional PDAF and 3-axis sensor-shift plus 2-axis lens shift OIS, a 50MP f/2.2 1.0-micron 110-degree ultrawide (Sony IMX 766) with omni-directional PDAF, and a 13MP f/2.4 1.0-micron 2x telephoto with PDAF (no OIS). A custom 6nm ISP called MariSilicon X completes the package.
OPPO’s in-house ISP supports sensor fusion and is designed to excel at low-light photography and – in particular – night-time video capture. This, combined with high-quality sensors, glass elements in the main lens, and Hasselblad’s color science, makes for a phenomenal imaging setup. As you can see from our sample images below, camera performance is superb all around.
By using identical 50MP sensors for both the main shooter and the ultrawide, and fusing sensor data from the 13MP telephoto, the Find X5 Pro delivers consistent color and exposure across a broad range of scenarios.
Focusing particularly on the 50MP ultrawide angle lens, as you can see from the sample shots above, image quality is fantastic, even right up to the edges of the shot with very low colour distortion or aberration. This is definitely one of, if not, the best ultrawide camera set ups on any current flagship.
Beyond the OIS system and the large pixel-binned sensors which benefit low-light performance, the 13-channel spectral sensor helps with color accuracy and the selfie camera’s RGBW pixel matrix improves sensitivity.
Below are OPPO Find X5 Pro low light photos compared with the Google Pixel 6 Pro which would be seen as one of the leading devices when it comes to capturing in low light.
As you can see, the OPPO captures just as much detail as the Pixel 6 Pro in its low light image, especially in the small pot at the front of the image but, thanks to the MariSilicon X chip, it did this in a much quicker time than the 6 Pro, meaning you don’t have to keep you hand as steady for as long, helping reduce the chances of blurring the final image.
It must be said, this image was captured in the normal photo mode and not the dedicated ‘Night’ mode which, when selected, can have an exposure time of up to 10 seconds, depending on how low the light levels are. For this, you’ll definitely need to keep your hand as still as possible but results are just as impressive.
In the below two stills captured while recording low light video on both devices, you can really see their new NPU coming into its own. The Find X5 Pro, when set to the main 50MP wide angle lens, is capable of capturing much brighter, more detailed 4K/30fps footage whilst still keeping noise to a minimum.
Portrait mode does a decent job of artificially blurring the background but still misses the mark now and again when it comes to edge detection. You can see it slightly clipped my left ear in the below shot. Otherwise, detail is very good and HDR manages to balanced the bright and dark areas of the photo quite well.
Unfortunately, what’s missing here is a stronger telephoto (3x optical zoom or higher, with OIS), and 4K 60fps recording on the selfie camera (it currently tops out at 1080p 30fps). Zooming is fine up to about 5x, but clarity starts dropping rapidly beyond that, so it seems odd OPPO didn’t carry over the 5x periscope telephoto from the Find X2 Pro to both last year’s Find X3 Pro and this year’s Find X5 Pro.
When it comes to battery life, the 5000mAh battery in here should be more than enough to get you through even the busiest of work days. This is especially true when it comes to OPPO’s battery management. Its past flagships all came with 4500mAh batteries, which we’ve always thought to be among the finest, so it’s great to seem them come truly up to par with the likes of what Samsung and Google are offering in their flagships.
Thanks to the availability of SuperVOOC flash charging, battery anxiety should never be an issue. Your phone battery will be 50% full after a 12-minute charge thanks to the 80w charging speeds capable from the included charger. For those who are more worried about battery life degrading over time due to these rapid charging speeds, OPPO’s newest battery architecture and charging optimizations allow the phone to last 1600 charge cycles. If you happen to pick up OPPO’s own AirVOOC charger, you’ll be able to charge the device wirelessly at up to 50W.
