Samsung‘s Galaxy S series has consistently set the benchmark for Android smartphones, and the Galaxy S24+ looks poised to continue that tradition. As an iterative upgrade to the S23+, the S24+ focuses on refining the user experience with a combination of subtle design tweaks, improved performance, and a camera system optimised for low-light conditions. Let’s delve deeper and see if the S24+ justifies the upgrade.

Design & Build Quality

The S24+ retains the familiar design language of its predecessor, with a glass front and back sandwiching a sturdy aluminium frame. This tried-and-tested formula offers a premium look and feel, while also ensuring excellent durability. The phone comes in a wider range of colours this year, including some eye-catching options like Sandstone Orange and Jade Green, allowing users to express their individuality. In the hand, the feel reminds me of an iPhone of old and the look of the screen layout even more so.

One noticeable change is the camera bumps on the back. They are slightly less prominent than on the S23+, creating a cleaner and more streamlined aesthetic. It still doesn’t sit flat on a surface which on a case will rectify. The phone remains comfortable to hold despite its large 6.7-inch display. Samsung has also made subtle improvements to the weight distribution, making the S24+ feel lighter in hand compared to its predecessor. The phone retains an IP68 water and dust resistance rating, ensuring it can withstand splashes and accidental dips.

The S24+ comes out of the box with the latest version of Android, along with Samsung’s One UI 5.1 on top. One UI continues to mature, offering a clean and customizable user interface that feels intuitive and responsive. Samsung has further refined its software experience by streamlining animations and reducing bloatware. The phone is also promised to receive regular security updates for several years, ensuring your data remains protected.

One UI 5.1 introduces some new features, including an enhanced multitasking experience with improved split-screen functionality and a revamped app drawer with better categorization options. Samsung Dex, which allows you to connect your phone to a monitor or projector for a desktop-like experience, also receives an upgrade, offering more features and improved performance.

The camera system on the S24+ is perhaps its biggest selling point. While the megapixel count remains the same (50MP main sensor, 12MP ultrawide, and 10MP telephoto), Samsung has focused on improving low-light performance. The main sensor has a larger aperture, allowing it to capture more light in dark environments. This translates to brighter, clearer photos with less noise.

Samsung’s improved Nightography mode further enhances low-light photography. It intelligently analyses the scene and adjusts settings to capture details that would otherwise be lost in the shadows which previous Samsungs had a tendency to do.

The telephoto lens offers 3x optical zoom and improved digital zoom capabilities, allowing you to capture distant objects with greater clarity. The ultrawide sensor remains excellent for capturing expansive landscapes and group photos.

On the front, the 12MP selfie camera also benefits from improvements in low-light performance. The camera app offers a variety of shooting modes and features, including portrait mode, scene optimizer, and a new “Director’s View” mode (called “Dual Rec” in the “MORE” section of the camera app) that allows you to simultaneously record from the front and rear cameras. Overall, the S24+ camera system delivers excellent photo and video quality, making it a great choice for mobile photography enthusiasts.

The S24+ packs a 4900mAh battery, which is a slight increase compared to the S23+. This, coupled with the phone’s efficient processor and software optimizations, translates to excellent battery life which is now expected for this price point. You can easily get through a full day of moderate to heavy usage on a single charge.

The S24+ also supports 45W fast wired charging, allowing you to quickly top up the battery when needed. More and more I find this a feature I require. Additionally, the phone supports 15W wireless charging and 4.5W reverse wireless charging, making it a convenient option for charging other devices on the go.

The Samsung Galaxy S24+ is an excellent evolution of the S23+. While it may not be a revolutionary upgrade, the improvements it offers are somwhat. The refined design, improved camera performance, and longer battery life make it a compelling choice for users looking for a premium Android smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy S24+ Review | TheEffect.NetIf you’re a current S23+ user, the upgrade might not be a necessity unless you prioritise low-light photography or a slightly sleeker design. However, for anyone looking for a top-of-the-line Android experience with a fantastic camera system, the Galaxy S24+ is a very strong contender. With its combination of power, performance, and premium features, the S24+ continues Samsung’s dominance in the flagship smartphone market.
