The Xiaomi 15 Ultra is here, and it’s arguably the brand’s most ambitious smartphone yet. With a focus on top-tier performance, a stunning design, and a camera system that genuinely competes with (if not, beats) the best, it has a lot to offer. But does it do enough to make you want to switch from your current flagship? After using it extensively, I can confidently say that this is the first phone in a long time that has me seriously considering a move away from my Google Pixel 9 Pro XL.

Design & Build Quality

When looking at last year’s Xiaomi 14 Ultra, The Xiaomi 15 Ultra looks to maintain the premium look and feel while introducing a few refinements. The standout design feature is the ‘Silver Chrome’ rear, which instantly reminds me of the classic Leica cameras. This is a clear nod to Xiaomi’s ongoing partnership with the legendary German photography brand, and it gives the device a distinct, retro aesthetic that sets it apart from other flagships.

Xiaomi 15 Ultra Review | TheEffect.NetThe 6.73″ LTPO AMOLED display is a visual treat, boasting a 3200 x 1440 resolution and a peak brightness of 3200 nits. Whether you’re outdoors in bright sunlight or watching HDR content, the screen delivers exceptional clarity, contrast, and colour accuracy. Xiaomi’s Shield Glass 2.0 protects the display, adding an extra layer of durability, while the IP68 rating ensures it can handle dust and water exposure with ease.

The stereo speakers are another highlight. They produce impressively loud and bass-rich audio, making them some of the best in a smartphone today. The only design compromise is the sheer size of the camera bump. It’s massive—no two ways about it. While you do get used to it over time, it does make the phone feel slightly top-heavy when using it without a case.

Software Features

Running on HyperOS 2.0, layered on top of Android 15, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra is powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite processor. Performance is buttery smooth, and Xiaomi’s AI integration takes things up a notch. Features like AI Interpreter, AI Gallery Editor, and AI Writing bring useful enhancements, working alongside Google’s own Gemini AI. While some of the other AI implementations feel a little rough around the edges, the overall offering is impressive.

That said, Xiaomi still lags behind Samsung and Google when it comes to software support. With only four years of major Android updates and six years of security updates, it falls short of the seven-year commitment we’re seeing from competitors. Given how powerful this phone is, it would have been great to see a longer update promise.

Performance

Simply put, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra is an absolute powerhouse. The Snapdragon 8 Elite, paired with 16GB of RAM, delivers class-leading performance. Whether you’re multitasking, editing 4K videos on the fly, or playing graphically demanding games like Zenless Zone Zero or Asphalt 9, this phone doesn’t break a sweat.

Gaming performance is particularly impressive. The combination of raw power, efficient cooling, and the high-refresh-rate display makes this an excellent device for mobile gamers.

The new chip is also more power-efficient, meaning it doesn’t just deliver speed but also better longevity over time.

Cameras

If there’s one reason to buy the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, it’s the camera system. This is a phone that genuinely makes me want to be a better photographer, due to the sheer amount of versatility and flexibility the camera system offers.

The quad-camera setup includes a 50MP main camera with a massive 1-inch sensor for incredible light capture and dynamic range, a 50MP ultrawide camera with a 115-degree field of view, a 50MP 3x telephoto lens for crisp mid-range shots, and a 200MP periscope zoom lens offering 4.3x optical zoom and incredible clarity at long distances.

The periscope zoom lens is the star of the show, capturing distant subjects with stunning detail while keeping noise and blur to a minimum. No other smartphone currently offers this level of zoom performance.

Portrait mode also gets a major upgrade, thanks to improved subject separation and natural-looking bokeh effects. Xiaomi’s partnership with Leica is evident in the tuning of colours and contrast, producing images that look professional straight out of the camera app.

The 32MP selfie camera is solid but has a couple of limitations. I wish it had a wider field of view and autofocus support, but its low-light performance is excellent, making group shots in darker settings much easier.

Battery Life

Battery life is another strong suit of the Xiaomi 15 Ultra. The 5,410mAh battery (with a 6,000mAh variant in China) easily lasts a full day with heavy use and can stretch into a second day with moderate usage.

Charging speeds are impressive too. The 90W wired charging fills the battery from 0 to 100% in around 40 minutes. The 80W wireless charging is among the fastest in the industry. The 10W reverse wireless charging allows you to top up other devices.

The only downside is that Xiaomi doesn’t include the fast charger or wireless charging accessories in the box, so you’ll need to buy them separately.

Conclusion

The Xiaomi 15 Ultra is an all-around beast of a smartphone. It combines premium design, a gorgeous display, blazing-fast performance, and an industry-leading camera system. The software experience is solid, even if Xiaomi still has room for improvement in AI features and update commitments.

Xiaomi 15 Ultra | TheEffect.NetAs someone who has loved using the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL, I can confidently say that the Xiaomi 15 Ultra is the first phone in a long time that has tempted me to switch. The camera alone is that good—it’s a device that genuinely makes me want to take more photos and push my creativity further.

Xiaomi 15 Ultra Pricing & Availability

The Xiaomi 15 Ultra is available in Ireland for €1,599 for the 16GB RAM / 512GB storage model. It comes in just one colour—Silver Chrome—which, in our opinion, is the best-looking option anyway.

Xiaomi 15 Ultra Review | TheEffect.NetYou can pick it up at Harvey Norman and Tesco Mobile. If you buy from Harvey Norman, you’ll also get the Xiaomi 15 Ultra Photography Kit as a bonus.
