Google has unveiled the Pixel 9a, the latest addition to its smartphone line-up. Designed as a more affordable alternative to the flagship models, the Pixel 9a retains many of the key features associated with the Pixel brand. Below are the key specs and features of this new affordable additional to the Pixel line.
Display & Design
The Pixel 9a features a 6.3″ Actua display with a resolution of 1080 x 2424, offering a pixel density of 422.2 PPI. The screen supports a variable refresh rate ranging from 60Hz to 120Hz, providing smoother scrolling and better responsiveness when needed. It is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and supports HDR content, with peak brightness reaching up to 2700 nits for improved visibility in bright conditions.
In terms of build, the Pixel 9a measures 154.7 x 73.3 x 8.9 mm and weighs 185.9 g. The device has a composite matte back with a satin metal frame. It is also rated IP68 for dust and water resistance, ensuring it can withstand accidental exposure to water and dust.
Performance & Battery Life
At the core of the Pixel 9a is Google’s Tensor G4 processor, paired with 8GB of RAM. The same processor found in its siblings from 2024 so users shouldn’t expect any sort of reduction in speed. The device is available in two storage configurations: 128GB and 256GB. Security is handled by the Titan M2 security coprocessor.
When it comes to battery, the Pixel 9a houses a 5100mAh battery (the largest battery yet in a Pixel phone), which Google claims can last beyond 30 hours on a single charge. For users looking to extend battery life further, the Extreme Battery Saver mode can stretch usage up to 100 hours by limiting background activity. The phone supports fast charging and is compatible with Qi-certified wireless chargers.
Cameras
Google’s Pixel devices are known for their camera capabilities, and the Pixel 9a continues that trend with a dual-camera setup on the back. The main sensor is a 48MP wide-angle camera with optical image stabilisation (OIS) to reduce motion blur. It is accompanied by a 13MP ultra-wide camera with a 120° field of view. The device also supports Super Res Zoom up to 8x.
On the front, the Pixel 9a features a 13MP ultra-wide camera with a 96.1° field of view, making it suitable for group selfies and wide-angle shots.
The phone includes a variety of camera features such as Night Sight for improved low-light photography, Portrait Mode for background blur effects, and an astrophotography mode for capturing night skies. Editing tools like Magic Eraser and Magic Editor are also available, allowing users to remove unwanted elements and enhance photos directly from the device.
In terms of video, the rear camera supports 4K recording at 30 and 60 frames per second, while the front camera can record 4K at 30 frames per second. Additional video stabilisation features such as Cinematic Pan and Active Stabilisation are also included.
Connectivity & Software
The Pixel 9a supports 5G connectivity and includes Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, and Google Cast for wireless content sharing. The device offers dual SIM functionality, supporting both a physical Nano SIM and an eSIM.
Out of the box, the Pixel 9a runs on Android 15 and will receive seven years of OS and security updates. Biometric security options include both fingerprint and face unlock. The device also comes with Google VPN at no extra cost and built-in protections against malware and phishing attacks.
Additional Features
The Pixel 9a is equipped with stereo speakers and a USB Type-C 3.2 port. Google has also integrated a range of safety features, including Emergency SOS, Car Crash Detection, and Earthquake Alerts.
