One Hamsa’s UNDERDOGS makes its way to PS VR2, bringing its unique brand of brutal, physics-driven mech combat to Sony’s cutting-edge headset. Having already impressed players on PC, the move to PlayStation VR2 allows the game to take advantage of the system’s OLED HDR display and advanced haptics—though unfortunately, it does not make use of the headset haptics, a missed opportunity that could have further heightened immersion. Nonetheless, UNDERDOGS delivers an engaging, sweat-inducing experience that is both rewarding and punishing in equal measure.

UNDERDOGS PS VR2 Review | TheEffect.NetStory

Set in a dystopian future where an all-powerful AI rules over society, UNDERDOGS follows two brothers desperate to escape to New Brakka, the last human stronghold. Their only way in? Survive the brutal underground mech battles, fighting their way through an unforgiving roguelike tournament.

UNDERDOGS PS VR2 Review | TheEffect.NetThe story is woven into the experience through stylish comic book-style cutscenes, reinforcing the game’s gritty aesthetic. The narrative is far from intrusive, allowing players to focus on the action while adding just enough context to the world to keep them invested. The grime-infused dialogue and voice acting bring personality to the game, though at times, the excessive profanity feels slightly overdone. Still, it successfully builds the ruthless, underground fight-club atmosphere that makes UNDERDOGS feel distinct.

Gameplay

UNDERDOGS is a roguelike arena brawler where players pilot a gorilla-inspired mech, the Rilla, using their own physical movements to attack and navigate. The game employs a locomotion system reminiscent of Gorilla Tag, where players use their arms to move, grab ledges, and propel themselves across arenas. This movement style may take some getting used to, but it quickly becomes second nature and allows for incredibly fluid combat.

Each run consists of a series of fights across two main arenas, culminating in a boss battle. Between fights, players can upgrade their Rilla’s arms and cockpit, equipping new perks, weapons, and modifications. Some upgrades provide significant advantages, while others come with trade-offs, adding a layer of strategy to each run.

Beyond the core roguelike loop, Skirmish Mode provides a way to test out different Rilla builds, fighting against waves of enemies under a time limit. This mode extends the game’s longevity, offering an alternative to the progression-based campaign.

Combat is purely physics-driven, meaning that punching harder in real life results in stronger attacks. The haptic feedback from the Sense controllers adds weight to every hit, making battles feel satisfyingly impactful. However, the lack of headset haptics is a noticeable omission, as it could have further enhanced the immersion—especially when taking heavy blows or slamming into walls.

Visuals

Visually, UNDERDOGS takes full advantage of the PS VR2’s OLED HDR display, delivering deep blacks, sharp contrasts, and vibrant colours. The game’s gritty cyberpunk aesthetic is enhanced by strong lighting effects and environmental detail, immersing players in its dystopian world.

The use of cell-shaded comic book-style cutscenes adds to the game’s unique identity, breaking up the action with stylish storytelling. The arenas themselves are filled with neon-soaked grime, reinforcing the underground fight club vibe.

The performance is rock solid, with smooth frame rates and crisp visuals, ensuring that every battle feels fluid and responsive. On PS VR2, the game looks better than ever, with the OLED screen’s high contrast making dark environments pop.

UNDERDOGS PS VR2 Review | TheEffect.NetConclusion

One Hamsa has successfully brought UNDERDOGS to PS VR2, enhancing its already impressive foundation with better visuals and improved haptic feedback via the Sense controllers. The physics-driven combat and Gorilla Tag-style locomotion create a highly engaging, physical experience, making it one of the most immersive VR roguelikes available.

However, the lack of headset haptics is a missed opportunity, as it could have made the combat even more visceral. Despite this, UNDERDOGS remains an outstanding addition to the PS VR2 library. If you’re looking for a game that will push your physical endurance while delivering intense, satisfying mech combat, UNDERDOGS is well worth a spot in your collection.
