Dyson has just unveiled its latest floor cleaner, the PencilWash, which marks a shift toward a much slimmer and more lightweight profile for wet cleaning. The machine is built specifically to handle wet spills and stains while ensuring the floor is dry enough to walk on shortly after. By combining their existing wet-cleaning tech with a new, ultra-thin format, Dyson is aiming for a device that is as easy to move around as a standard broom.
Design & Ease of Use
The most noticeable feature of the PencilWash is the handle, which is only 38mm in diameter. This slim build is intended to make the machine much more comfortable to hold and easier to tuck away in a cupboard when it is not being used. While the entire machine weighs 2.2kg, the weight you actually feel in your hand while cleaning is just 380g.
This lightweight design is paired with some clever manoeuvrability. The machine can lie almost completely flat at an angle of 170°. This allows it to slide under low furniture and into tight gaps with a clearance of about 15cm, which is usually a struggle for bulkier wet-and-dry cleaners.
Instead of using a traditional filter, the PencilWash uses a filter-free design. Dyson opted for this to avoid the common issues of trapped dirt, bacteria growth, and the unpleasant smells that often come with wet cleaners. This setup also helps maintain consistent performance by reducing the chance of blockages or sludge build-up.
The actual cleaning is done by a high-density microfibre roller that features 64,000 filaments per cm. As the roller spins, an 8-point hydration system ensures it is always being fed with fresh water. This means you aren’t just pushing dirty water around the floor; the machine continuously extracts the waste as it goes. Users can also choose between two hydration modes to control how much water is used, depending on whether they are dealing with a light spill or a more stubborn mark.
Battery Life & Maintenance
The machine is powered by a battery that gives you about 30 minutes of cleaning time. If you need more time, the battery pack is swappable, though extra packs are sold separately. In terms of coverage, a single 300mL tank of clean water is enough to wash roughly 100m2 of flooring when used in the low hydration setting.
To help with the process, there is a new Dyson 02 Probiotic cleaning solution. It is a non-toxic formula designed to work with their wet cleaners to lift dirt at a microscopic level while staying safe for use around children and pets.
Dyson PencilWash Pricing & Availability
The Dyson PencilWash will be priced at €349. It is set to become available in Ireland from April 8th from dyson.ie.
