As with any Dyson product, I was very excited to try the new Supersonic r hairdryer. Originally designed for hair salons, who have had exclusive use for the past year, it is now available to purchase.

The big question is whether it lives up to the hype and justifies its premium price point. Here is my verdict.

Design & Build Quality

The first thing you notice when you pick up the Supersonic r is just how lightweight it is. Weighing just 325g, it is the lightest hairdryer Dyson has produced yet, and what’s remarkable is how much power is packed into it.

The curved design is not just for show either. It genuinely allows for easier styling, helping you reach those awkward areas that a traditional shaped hairdryer simply cannot get to.

It comes with five attachments and there is a nice option to choose which set suits your hair type: Straight and Wavy, or Curly and Coily. I tested the Straight and Wavy set, which includes the flyaway attachment, powerful air attachment, professional concentrator, gentle air attachment, and smoothing nozzle.

https://www.theeffect.net/?s=dyson&post_type=postDyson has engineered the attachments to automatically adjust to the correct temperature and airflow once connected, though if you prefer more heat or more power you can adjust the settings and the hairdryer will remember your preferences next time using RFID technology.

The one small negative, and it is not a new one, is the plug. There is no getting away from it: it is massive. That said, it holds all the technology that makes these products so great and honestly I do not notice it other than when I want to pack it away, so it is something I can overlook.

My initial thought on turning on the hairdryer was that it did not seem as powerful as other Dyson hairdryers I have tried. How wrong I was. The Hyperdymium motor spins at up to 110,000rpm, and once it gets going it blowdries hair super quick and delivers a gorgeous shiny, sleek finish.

Each of the five attachments brings something different. The Flyaway attachment uses the Coanda effect to attract flyaways and bind them to longer hair. I have used this nozzle before on other Dyson products but really noticed a big difference with this hairdryer. The Powerful Air attachment creates a high-powered airflow to dry hair fast, and it definitely delivers.

I think it is the quickest I have ever blowdried my hair. The Professional Concentrator is the traditional triangle-shaped nozzle that focuses the airflow, and the Smoothing nozzle is designed to deliver more ions to reduce frizz and smooth the hair.

Dyson claims the Supersonic r reduces static frizz by up to 46%, and from my experience that stacks up. The Gentle Air attachment helps to spread the airflow so it is gentler on the scalp. I did not love this one as speed is everything to me these days, though I can see the appeal.

There are four heat and airflow settings including a cold shot, and the balance Dyson has struck here is impressive. It is the first time I have used a hairdryer that actually makes my hair shine, and with minimal effort too. Dyson claims a smoother finish and more shine, and they are not wrong on either count.

Conclusion

The Dyson Supersonic r is a seriously impressive hairdryer. It is super lightweight, the curved design makes styling easier than ever, and the results genuinely speak for themselves.

If you have long thick hair in particular, this really could make all the difference to your drying experience and save you that awful arm pain.

The RFID attachment technology is a clever touch that makes the whole experience feel personal and intuitive. Aside from the bulky plug, there is very little to fault here.
